What Happens When California Movers Get in the Same Room?

Three cities. Three days. Countless conversations about AI, compliance, marketing, payments, and what it takes to run a moving company in California.

There's never a "slow season" to ask movers to step away from their businesses, especially not in the middle of summer. That's what made this year's California Inner Circle so special.

Over three days, we traveled from Los Angeles to San Diego and wrapped things up in San Francisco, bringing together movers from across the state to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another. Many attendees even brought their spouses and kids, which gave the events a different kind of energy. It felt less like a conference and more like getting together with people who understand exactly what this business demands.

And yes, we capped each event off with the new Spider-Man movie. Safe to say it was a hit. Watching superheroes save New York with a theater full of movers felt oddly fitting. After all, both groups spend their days solving problems under pressure.

Before the movie, we played our own movie trailer celebrating the industry. #EveryMoverHasALegacy

The movie was fun, but the conversations are what we'll remember.

Compliance Is Becoming a Business Conversation

One of the most valuable discussions came from a moving company that serves an 80% military customer base. That led to an in-depth conversation around CMMC compliance and what those evolving requirements mean for everyone involved.

We spent time talking through where the responsibilities of a software provider begin and end, and where the moving company's responsibilities take over. Those distinctions matter, especially as cybersecurity requirements continue to evolve.

We also shared where SmartMoving stands today. We're currently CMMC Level 1 compliant, and we're committed to achieving Level 2 once the federal requirements are finalized.

These aren't conversations about checking a box anymore. They're about protecting customers, preparing for the future, and making sure everyone understands their role.

Running a Moving Company in California Isn't Simple

California brings its own set of operational challenges, and labor compliance was another topic that came up throughout the tour.

How should drive time be handled? When should crews clock in? What's the best way to manage travel time before and after a job while staying compliant?

There wasn't one universal answer, and that's what made the discussion valuable. Movers shared how they're approaching these challenges today while exploring how SmartMoving can help simplify those workflows without adding more administrative work.

Marketing Doesn't End When the Truck Pulls Away

Marketing was another common theme across all three cities. Everyone wants to know if their advertising dollars are actually producing jobs. As acquisition costs continue to rise, understanding what's working and what's not has never been more important.

But the conversation quickly shifted to what happens after the move. Reviews. Referrals. Reputation management. Those three things can drive just as much growth as the next advertising campaign, especially when they're happening consistently. We talked about how automation can help movers request reviews at the right time, encourage referrals, and build a stronger online reputation without relying on someone to remember one more task at the end of a busy day.

Payments Are Changing, Too

Another highlight was having our friends from Remedy Payments join us throughout the tour.

Their sessions sparked great conversations around E-Checks, reducing payment processing costs, and practical strategies for handling chargebacks. These weren't abstract ideas. They were real tactics movers could take home and apply immediately to improve cash flow and reduce unnecessary headaches.

AI Is Starting to Feel Practical

There was also plenty of excitement around TOB-E, SmartMoving's new AI Operations Assistant.

The questions weren't, "Should we use AI?" They were, "How can this save us time tomorrow?"

That's an exciting shift.

From reducing repetitive work to helping teams move faster, attendees shared thoughtful ideas about where AI can make the biggest impact inside their businesses. We're looking forward to building on those conversations in our upcoming TOB-E webinar, where we'll dive deeper into real-world use cases.

The Best Conversation Wasn't Planned

As much as we enjoyed talking about technology, compliance, and operations, my favorite moment had nothing to do with software.

During one of the events, a mover mentioned needing additional help with an upcoming job. Before the conversation was over, another moving company in the room offered to help. That's the kind of thing you can't schedule into an agenda.

Inner Circle has always been about bringing movers together, and moments like that are a reminder of why we keep doing it. Yes, companies come to learn about new technology. But they also come because they know they'll leave with new ideas, new relationships, and sometimes even a helping hand from someone sitting a few chairs away.

Looking Ahead to SmartMoving Summit

There was also plenty of excitement surrounding this year's SmartMoving Summit.

Lindsay Curtis, CEO of A Smart Move in San Diego, one of our upcoming panelists, joined us during the California tour and shared a preview of what's ahead. Between the speakers, educational sessions, and opportunities to connect with movers from across North America, it's clear that Summit is shaping up to be one of our biggest events yet.

If the conversations we had in California are any indication, there are going to be plenty more ideas worth sharing.

Thank You, California

To everyone who joined us, thank you.

Thank you for carving out time during your busiest season. Thank you for sharing your experiences so openly. Thank you for asking thoughtful questions and helping make every stop feel like a conversation instead of a presentation.

And thank you to the families who came along. Meeting spouses, kids, and the people supporting these businesses behind the scenes was one of the unexpected highlights of the trip.

Three cities. Three days. A lot of miles. A lot of ideas. And a reminder that the moving industry is at its best when people are willing to learn from one another.

Now we'd love to hear from you. Where should Inner Circle go next? Let us know what city you'd like us to visit, and we'll start planning the next one.
